Yes. Kiama NYE is a free, all-ages, family-friendly celebration with live music, roving performers, food vendors, family activities and carnival rides.

We strongly recommend taking the train, as parking near the event is very limited. If you must drive, park at Kiama Leisure Centre and catch the Special Event Shuttle Bus, running from 4pm. The last shuttle departs from Kiama Leagues Club at 10pm. Parking at the Leisure Centre is managed by the Jamberoo Rural Fire Service, with a requested $5 donation upon entry. Please note: Kiama Showground is not available for parking.

Yes. Kiama NYE is a free, non-ticketed event. Rides from Lauries Carnival are individually ticketed and charged separately.

We understand that large events can sometimes present challenges, especially for those with sensory needs or accessibility requirements, and we are here to help make your experience as enjoyable as possible.

The company that Council engages for the Fireworks display is Fireworks Australia.

• Fireworks Australia are the first and sole Australian fireworks company to introduce and use fireworks not constructed of cardboard. The casings and inserts are mould pressed using rice straw and calcite mineral. They are even more biodegradable than the cardboard units. The material has less waste in production, recycles an agricultural biproduct and generates less carbon in production.

• The new moulded casings have much better tolerances inside the tube which allows for a reduction in basic black lift powder of about 30%. The black lift powder is one of the key sources of carbon emissions.

• The chemicals in fireworks have changed in the last 20 years and now compounds that have straight chlorates, lead and other heavy metals are not used at all.

• Some of the reactions that you see are aggressive detonations that involve only quite small amounts of chemicals, the reaction is not combustion, and the carbon emissions are lower than expected. It’s a misnomer that fireworks generate a lot of CO2. There are likely to be far more emissions from the people driving to the show than the show itself.

• The fireworks show itself, uses no electricity, heating, cooling, heavy current machines, lights, or plant equipment.

Fireworks Australia believes that the biggest opportunities to improve their sustainability is to explore methods and work practices in the show delivery. These have included the following:

• Fireworks Australia operates from a 90-hectare facility in NSW. Since 1997 more than 2000 native tree plantings have been made and supported at this facility.

• The process buildings have been connected to solar systems and plant lighting has been replaced with LED hardware.

• Waste material from shows is returned to the factory and separated so that some resources can be diverted to recycling such as copper wire and cardboard. Only a small portion of the waste is sent to landfill.

Fireworks Australia have stated that they pride themselves in being leaders in embracing every reasonable method to reduce their environmental footprint and will continue to seek self-improvement in this area.

Despite fireworks, causing some detrimental impacts (mainly to do with a short period of noise pollution), we are proud of our partnership with Fireworks Australia, and their commitment to sustainability.

Dogs are permitted but must remain on-leash at all times. Please be mindful that the event space will be crowded, with small children, costumed entertainers, and loud noises.
