Art & Healing Talk with Erin Vink

Discover the powerful artistic practice of senior Aṉangu artist and ngangkari (traditional healer) Betty Muffler, whose deeply evocative monochromatic paintings reflect the profound connections between Country, healing and lived experience.

Based in Indulkana on the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands of South Australia, Muffler creates striking works using acrylic paint and oil stick on linen. Her distinctive visual language carries deep cultural significance, drawing on her experiences as an artist and traditional healer to explore themes of healing, memory and connection to Country.

In this engaging talk, Erin Vink, Senior Curator, First Nations Art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, delves into the meaning behind Muffler’s compelling monochromatic works, exploring the cultural knowledge, personal experiences and artistic vision that inform her practice, and examining why her work has garnered widespread recognition.

An opportunity to gain a deeper appreciation of one of Aṉangu art’s distinctive contemporary voices and the powerful stories held within her work.
