Under the Southern Sky Exhibition

22/07/2019 - 04/08/2019 @ From 10:00 AM Gerringong NSW

Artwork by Nathan Miller ‘Under The Southern Sky’ is an exhibition of photographs of landscapes and seascapes from coastal NSW, taken between dusk and dawn. To me, these moments have always been timeless and have inspired me to capture these brief moments of magic. Planning of an image starts with an idea, place, time or impression. This helps me capture the mood and essence of the image. I have always thought of the lens as a brush to capture the structure of an image and developing the images with editing software as my palette to bring out the colours as I see them and give the image life. I have chosen to print these images on aluminium to intensify the vibrancy and fluidity of my photographs. 10am-5pm Monday-Friday 10am-4pm Saturday-Sunday

FOKL Presents - Jacqueline Kent Author Beyond Words: A year with Kenneth Cook.

03/08/2019 @ 02:30 PM – 04:00 PM Kiama NSW

The Friends of Kiama Library invite you to join Jacqueline Kent, one the country's finest biographers, for a talk about her new memoir, Beyond Words: A year with Kenneth Cook.  In 1985 Jacqueline Kent was content with her life. She had a satisfying career as a freelance book editor, and was emerging as a writer. Living and working alone, she relished her independence. But then she met Kenneth Cook, author of the Australian classic Wake in Fright, and they fell in love.  With bewildering speed Jacqueline found herself in alien territory: with a man almost twenty years older, whose life experience could not have been more different from her own. She had to come to terms with complicated finances and expectations, and to negotiate relationships with Ken’s children, four people almost her own age. But with this man of contradictions – funny and sad, headstrong and tender – she found real and sustaining companionship. Their life together was often joyful, sometimes enraging, always exciting – until one devastating evening. But, as Jacqueline discovered, even when a story is over that doesn’t mean it has come to an end.   Jacqueline Kent was born in Sydney and grew up there and in Adelaide. After completing an arts degree she returned to Sydney and worked as a journalist, radio producer and scriptwriter for the ABC; in the 1970s she changed direction and became a book editor. She has written books of social history, general non-fiction and biography. A Certain Style: Beatrice Davis, A Literary Life won the National Biography Award and the Nita B. Kibble Award, and she is the biographer of musician and activist Hephzibah Menuhin, and of Julia Gillard. She holds a Doctorate of Creative Arts from the University of Technology, Sydney. Beyond Words: A Year with Kenneth Cook is her first memoir.   Afternoon will be served after the event and there will be books available for purchase and signing on the day.   No need book, just come along.  FOKL members - $5.00Guests - $8.00

David Nicholls Author Event in Kiama

31/08/2019 @ From 03:00 PM Kiama NSW

International Bestselling Author, David Nicholls, to visit Kiama in his first Australian tour and his only event outside a major city, presented by Bouquiniste Bookshop Cafe. David Nicholls will be in conversation with Clayton Zane (co-owner of Bouquiniste Bookshop) and special guest Edwina Bartholomew. The author talk will be held on Saturday 31st August at 3pm, at The Pavilion Kiama, discussing David’s latest novel Sweet Sorrow.  Copies of David’s novels will be available at the event, with a Book Signing commencing after the talk. David Nicholls is the author of the worldwide phenomenon One Day, and bestselling novels Us, The Understudy and Starter for Ten. His novels have sold over eight million copies worldwide and are published in forty languages. David’s last book, Us, was longlisted for The Man Booker Prize for Fiction in 2014. David wrote the screenplay for the film adaptations of his novels One Day, which starred Anne Hathaway and Started for Ten, which starred James McAvoy. David recently won a BAFTA award and was nominated for an Emmy for Patrick Melrose, his adaptation of the novels by Edward St Aubyn, starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Sweet Sorrow 'That most rare and coveted of literary feats: a popular novel of serious merit, a bestseller that will also endure.' – Observer. 'Triumph ... the sense of nostalgia is visceral and intense, almost time-bending.' - The Sunday Times. 'Does any writer do nostalgia quite like David Nicholls? His bestseller One Day was partly so adored for the way he captured the feeling of being young, being in love, and being confused. He returns to similarly fertile territory on Sweet Sorrow, only stepping back into teenage years, the writing an ideal blend of the gently humorous and utterly heartfelt. It made me feel like something had swollen up inside my chest, and readers are liable to find their thoughts drifting over their own misspent school holidays or crushingly ardent first loves.' - Holly Williams, The Independent, UK.
