The Friends of Kiama Library, the Kiama and District Historical Society and Kiama Library are commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of Charmian Clift - one of Kiama's, and indeed Australia's, most legendary writers - with a talk presented by Charmian's biographer, Nadia Wheatley, followed by a discussion panel featuring commentators Richard Walsh, Graham Tucker and Boni Maywald. Charmian Clift was a unique Australian talent – a naturally gifted writer with incredible charm, she rose from a working-class background to become a much-loved writer in Australia and abroad. Born in Kiama in 1923, Charmian went on to become a prize-winning travel and fiction writer, literary collaborator with her husband George Johnston, and one of the most influential newspaper columnists in Australia in the 1960s, shaping the opinions of thousands of readers. When she died, many felt as though they had lost a personal friend. Our speaker, Nadia Wheatley, is herself a prolific and successful Australian writer whose work includes novels, biographies, histories and also children's books. Her biography The Life and Myth of Charmian Clift was described by one critic as 'one of the greatest Australian biographies' and won the NSW Premier's Award for Australian History. Our esteemed panel commentators will add their own insights from their personal experiences and deep interest in various aspects of Charmian’s life. The event will be held at Kiama Library on Saturday 6 July at 2.30 pm. Tickets are $10, which includes a light afternoon tea and free entry to the museum exhibition at the Pilot's Cottage throughout the weekend, which has an excellent display recording her life and work. The Library will also be launching its new ‘Remembering Charmian Clift’ self-guided walking tour app at the event, which highlight locations around Kiama that influenced her work and played an important role in Charmian’s life.
