Gerringong Pics and Flicks

05/04/2019 @ From 08:00 PM Gerringong NSW

APRIL MOVIE: "Leave no trace"Summary: Will (Ben Foster) and his teenage daughter, Tom (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie), have lived off the grid for years in the forests of Portland, Oregon. When their idyllic life is shattered, both are put into social services. After clashing with their new surroundings, Will and Tom set off on a harrowing journey back to their wild homeland.  Debra Granik, the director, treats the story with a feather-light touch, while still grounding the film in an almost documentary-style reality. She doesn't "hammer things home," she lets things unfold.  The critique of society is there in the material, but it's implicit, not explicit. How the culture treats its wounded warriors is a disgrace, but—on the flip side— Tom is a child. She doesn't go to school. The culture needs to care about her too. As Will continues to resist, even in the face of kindness, Tom is almost torn in two, by her curiosity about the world, and her attachment to her father.  Granik shows great insight into the struggles of those who choose to "opt out," those who just want to be left alone, those who literally can't "fit in" to the larger world. At its very best, it is an immensely moving portrait of a father and daughter who love each other, and who can't bear to be apart.   Tickets go on sale at Gerringong Town Hall at 7.20pm with the film starting at 8.00pm. After the film, stay for our Gerringong Pics and Flicks world famous Tea, Coffee and Cakes ($4.00) and take the time to discuss the film or anything else you like in a relaxed social atmosphere. Any questions? Email us at picsandflicks@gmail.com For the movie details of each month, please check either the Gerringong Pics & Flicks Website or you can download our What's On from our website. Membership $10 on the night, or buy a an annual subscription. Annual membership is only $60. That's 11 movies from date you sign up 10-ticket multi-use cards are only $80

Local member Lyn Behan will be guest speaker of the Friends of Kiama LIbrary on Saturday 6 April at 2.30pm in the Family History Centre to talk about her recently published historical romance “The Men and the Medium”. The book is inspired by Lyn’s grandmother and follows the life of Lily Bancroft, a spiritualist medium and healer, together with her three husbands. Set against the backdrop of two world wars, Lily’s tumultuous life, follows the social and political transformation of post-Victorian England, and the turmoil of individual and family lives caught up in a whirl wind of social change. Copies are available for $25 each from Gerringong Newsagency, Fern Street, Gerringong, and Jennie’s Book Nook, Centrepoint Arcade, Kiama, and will also be available for signature and sale at the talk. Lyn Behan grew up in post-war Britain.  She spent her working life in IT as a computer programmer and systems analyst, working in England, Ireland, Luxembourg, Germany and Australia. In 2000 she took a year off work to build a mudbrick house with her partner on the Far South Coast.
