Sue Irvin is a local Gerringong artist, teacher, arts administrator, lecturer and guide at Bundanon. Many of the works were inspired by travelling internationally (Venice Reverie), nationally (Scarce Water, the Kimberley), in the Illawarra (Salute to Lake Illawarra), in the Shoalhaven (Moona Moona Remembered ), or created solely in her Gerringong studio (Cicada Series). The exhibition comprises of 75 artworks that explore various aspects of landscape in an expressive, exploratory and unique manner, often verging on abstraction. Local Gerringong Artist Gitte Backhausen has selected an array of new expressive paintings for this solo exhibition. Sharing her love for the landscape, her paintings depicts a subconscious abstract response to her surroundings. The ‘secret’ refers to the approach of free spontaneous expressive markmaking, her work never planned or determined by a preconceived idea, revealing a secret inner world of wonder. “To me, art is freedom. It is an opportunity to withdraw from the busy world and let my subconscious express itself, without the restrictions or demands of the mind. I often refer to my my paintings as subconscious abstract landscapes,as they are unplanned and a spontaneous expression of the here and now”. Gitte’s interest in psychology has contributetd to the reflective aspects of her practice and conitinues to play an importantrole in the narratives of her art. Regularly selected as a finalist in art prizes, her career continues to expand. “In addition to my own practice, I enjoy sharing my love for the creative process with others through my workshops, supporting artists in developing their own unique visual language and build trust in their work”.
